2023 Cricket Season Starts Off With A Cliffhanger

Words: Anthony Hague

On 8 April 2023, the YC&AC Gentlemen’s XI took to the field to play our old friends, the British Embassy Cricket Club. With the Embassy Captain, Richard Sciver, winning the toss, the YC&AC went into bat. With this being our first match of the season there were a few nerves on display but after 30 overs of some mixed batting, the YC&AC amassed a very respectable 173 for 8.

The Embassy squad took to the field and after some early successes with the ball against a very determined opening pair, Agustine Jacob and Anthony Morcom rook to the crease and edged their team ever closer to victory. In desperation, YC&AC Captain, Anthony Hague, turned to the part time leg spin of Taiga Hague. In a matter of 3 deliveries, young Taiga struck, taking a hat trick! The first in more than a decade. Alas, this was not to be enough for the Gentlemen this time and the Embassy hit the target in the 27th over.

Unbeknownst to Anthony Hague, Richard Freeman kindly pointed out the old YC&AC tradition of the hat trick taker buying three jugs of beer! Needless to say, although Anthony was a little poorer, a good time was had by both both sides after the match upon retiring to the Sports Bar.

There are more matches planned for this season. If you would like to play, please contact the YC&AC sports manager, Yusuke.
