YC&AC Over The Line in Close Won Contest!

Words: Anthony Hague YC&AC Cricket Captain

On Thursday, May 14, 2026

On an unusually hot May day, the pride of YC&AC turned out in their sky blue strip to take on the British Embassy Cricket Club. The BECC had a new captain, the indomitable Kris Bayne, who is known for his tricky off spin. Kris was on a lucky streak after winning the toss and asking the YC&AC to bowl. Would the old legs of YC&AC make it through 25 overs in 29 degree heat?

Manish and Shugo opened the bowling and kept the BECC batsmen pinned down. Shugo kept up his line and length and was rewarded with the wicket of Sud, an Embassy star. Anthony threw Rich Freeman the ball and despite some complaining about it being a bit early for spin, he ripped into the Embassy batsmen, removing their number 3 and 4 in consecutive balls! The Embassy were under pressure and Captain Hague wanted to keep the pressure on. He threw the ball to the tall Yorkshire squire, Dave Rear. He bamboozled the batsman with a short one that nearly bounced twice. The number 2 Embassy batsman’s eyes lit up but he mistimed it and hit a slow moving return shot to Dave who snaffled it! It was time for the Captain to have a bowl and he took two wickets in his first over, one removing the middle stump of the number 7 batsman! Captain Bayne and Kenji then steadied the BECC ship but it was leaking badly and listing heavily. Alan Iwata then tricked the Embassy’s number 10 batsman with a straight one which he chipped to slip. Stu and Matt chipped in with some tight bowling and Maneesh cleaned up the tail. Embassy all out for 116 off 25 overs.

Captain Anthony Hague strode to the wicket with new member, Sunit aka Sunit the slogger! Sunit didn’t disappoint, cracking 26 off 17 deliveries. Anthony was clean bowled by the wily Vik for 5 but Maneesh was his devastating self, smashing 17 off 12. Will was also bowled by the wily Vik for 1 which saw Aussie Embassy cricketing stalwart Stu W stride to the wicket. Stu was soon joined at the crease by British Embassy stalwart, James H and with Ashes rivalry put to one side, the ANZAC and the Tommy got us back on track, inching us ever closer to victory. With James caught in the deep, Shugo came into bat and Stu and Shugo got us over the line in the 23rd over. Congratulations Gentlemen on a hard fought win. Man of the Match is shared between Sunit and Stu, who both hit 26 apiece. Truly was a fun day played in the spirit of the game.
