In May 1896, a Japanese team from Ichiko traveled to Yokohama to face the baseball team of the Yokohama Cricket and Athletic Club, the predecessor to the present-day Yokohama Country & Athletic Club. What unfolded across three games played between May 23 and July 4, 1896, captured the imagination of a nation and transformed baseball from a pastime into Japan's most beloved sport.
1896年5月、東京の旧制第一高等学校（一高）の野球部員たちは横浜を訪れ、YC＆ACの前身である横浜クリケット・アンド・アスレティック・クラブのチームと対戦しました。同年5月23日から7月4日にかけて行われた3試合は、日本全国の注目を集め、野球を日本の国民的スポーツへと押し上げるきっかけとなりました。

In the first game on May 23, Ichiko played flawlessly and easily beat YC&AC 29–4. In the rematch on June 6, Ichiko triumphed again, with pitcher Jutsuo Aoi and catcher Shukichi Fujino dazzling onlookers. The games drew hundreds of Japanese spectators who, according to the Japan Weekly Mail, "cheered most impartially every good point of the game, whether by their own men or by foreign players."
5月23日の第1試合では、一高は申し分のないプレーでYC＆ACを29対4で打ち破りました。6月26日の第2試合でも一高が連勝し、エース・青井銊男投手と捕手・藤野修吉選手の活躍が観衆を魅了しました。試合には数百人の日本人も観戦に訪れ、当時の英字紙『ジャパン・ウィークリー・メール』は「日本人も外国人も分け隔てなく好プレーに拍手を送った」と伝えています。
The players of Ichiko became national heroes, while the great poet and former Ichiko player Shiki Masaoka, who watched the 1896 games, further cemented baseball's place in the national psyche through his poetry and journalism.
一高の選手たちは国民的英雄となり、当時の試合を観戦した俳人・正岡子規は野球関連の俳句や新聞連載を通じて日本における野球文化の普及に大きく貢献しました。

横浜カントリー・アンド・アスレティック・クラブEstablished on 7 April 1884 by the merger of four Yokohama sports clubs, including the Yokohama Base Ball Club (est. 1876). The club changed its name to the Yokohama Country & Athletic Club in 1912. YC&AC is the oldest surviving baseball team in Asia and the club where international baseball in Japan was born.
1884年4月7日、横浜ベースボールクラブ（1876年創立）を含む4つのスポーツクラブの合併により設立。1912年に現在の横浜カントリー・アンド・アスレティック・クラブへ改称。アジアで現存する最古の野球チームであり、日本の国際野球が産声を上げた場所。

東京大学OB会Direct successors of the legendary Ichiko — the First Higher School students who stunned the world with three extraordinary games in 1896, and whose victories transformed baseball into Japan's national sport.
1896年の3試合で世界を驚かせた伝説の一高（旧制第一高等学校）の直系。その圧倒的な勝利が、野球を日本の国民的スポーツへと押し上げました。
Y-KO AlumniY校 Alumni
横浜商業高校OB会A club whose entire baseball tradition was born directly from the 1896 games. Y-KO supporters witnessed Ichiko's victories, received balls and bats as a gift, and founded their club that same year — with Jutsuo Aoi as their first coach. The club went on to reach the Koshien national championships sixteen times, including back-to-back runner-up finishes in 1983.
1896年の試合を観戦した応援団が、一高から贈られたボールとバットを礎に同年創部。初代コーチは一高の青井銊男投手。その後、全国高等学校野球選手権大会に16回出場し、1983年には春夏連続準優勝を果たした名門校。

Round-robin commemorative matches ラウンドロビン方式・記念試合The morning begins on the very turf where 130 years ago a group of young Japanese students rewrote the history of their nation's sport. Three games will unfold across the day — each one a living tribute to the institutions that shaped Japanese baseball.
130年前、若き日本人学生たちが歴史を塗り替えたあの伝説のグラウンドで、いよいよ試合の幕が上がります。この日の試合は単なる勝負ではありません。それは歴史の再演であり、次世代への継承です。

Commemorative Ceremony — Grounds 記念式典（グラウンド特設会場）
With Massi Murakami & Rami-chan Ramirez マッシー村上・ラミちゃんラミレス両氏出席A formal ceremony will be held at the grounds, featuring opening remarks by Honorary Chairman Masanori "Massi" Murakami, the first Japanese Major League Baseball player; the national anthems of Japan and the United States; and the presentation of commemorative gifts to each team. The ceremony will be joined by Alex "Rami-chan" Ramirez, a Japanese Baseball Hall of Famer and YC&AC Honorary Member. A commemorative program will be distributed to all players and guests.
グラウンドに設置された特設会場にて記念式典を開催します。日本初のメジャーリーガーで名誉会長の村上雅則「マッシー村上」による開会の挨拶、日米両国歌斉唱、各チームへの記念品贈呈などが予定されています。来賓各位には記念パンフレットを配布いたします。式典には、野球殿堂入りを果たしたYC＆AC名誉会員アレックス「ラミちゃん」ラミレス氏も出席いたします。
Evening Gala — YC&AC Gymnasium 記念パーティー（YC＆AC体育館）
Celebration dinner & awards 祝賀ディナー・特別表彰The day concludes with a celebration dinner featuring speeches from team captains — including YC&AC Baseball Team Captain Jeff Robbins and University of Tokyo Alumni Kohei Miyadai (former Nippon-Ham and Yakult pitcher) — a game summary by former Pacific League umpire Yamazaki Natsuo, and special tributes from legendary guests.
夕の部では、YC＆ACベースボールキャプテンのジェフ・ロビンズ、東京大学野球部OB・宮台康平氏（元日ハム、ヤクルト投手）らによるスピーチや、元パリーグ審判員・山崎夏生氏による試合総評、伝説的なゲストからの特別な祝辞などを含む祝宴を予定しています。

The Rami-chan Cup ラミちゃんカップ
Field of Dreams 2026 is more than a celebration of history — it is an investment in the future of baseball in Japan. Proceeds from the event support the Rami-chan Cup, a children's baseball tournament founded by Alex "Rami-chan" Ramirez, Baseball Hall of Famer and YC&AC Honorary Member. The tournament started in 2020, providing young players across the Yokohama region with the opportunity to experience the joy of the game in the very city where international baseball was born.
フィールド・オブ・ドリームス2026は、歴史的な祭典であると同時に、日本野球の未来への橋渡しとしての役割を演じています。本イベントの収益の一部は、野球殿堂入りを果たしたYC＆AC名誉会員アレックス「ラミちゃん」ラミレス氏によって創設された子ども野球大会「ラミちゃんカップ」の支援に充てられます。2020年に始まった同大会は、横浜地域の子どもたちに国際野球発祥の地で野球の喜びを体験してもらうことを目的としています。
Just as the 1896 games inspired a generation of young Japanese players, so the Rami-chan Cup aims to ignite that same passion in the next generation of Yokohama's youth, ensuring the spirit of Field of Dreams lives on long after the final out.
130年前の試合が一高との出会いを通じてY校野球部の創設という夢を生んだように、ラミちゃんカップは横浜の子どもたちの心に同じ情熱を灯し、フィールド・オブ・ドリームスの精神を次の世代へと受け継いでいきます。
In Their Own Words
The 1896 games between YC&AC and Ichiko are an important page in the history of Japanese sport. What those young Japanese players showed the world was the courage to rise to a challenge, and the genuine bonds that sport can forge between people. That spirit spread baseball across the entire nation — and gave me the strength to cross the ocean myself. The history built by those who came before us only carries meaning when it is passed on. Events like this allow the next generation to feel the weight of the history beneath their feet. It reminds me, more than ever, of how important it is to keep that history alive.
「1896年のYC＆ACと一高の試合は、日本のスポーツ史において大切な歴史の一ページです。日本の若者たちが世界に示したものは、挑戦する勇気と、スポーツが生む人と人との真っ直ぐな交わりでした。その精神が野球を日本全土へと広め、私自身も海を渡る力を与えてくれました。先人たちが築いたこの歴史は、語り継がれてこそ意味を持ちます。このような場があることで、次の世代が自らの足元にある歴史の重みを知ることができる。歴史を伝えることの大切さを、改めて深く感じています」
One hundred and thirty years ago, a group of young Japanese students showed the world what Japan could achieve in Yokohama. We gather today not only to remember that moment, but to celebrate the unbreakable bond between Yokohama and baseball — a bond that gave birth to Y-KO's own great baseball tradition.
